BMI Not a Good Proxy for Breast Cancer Risk

Postmenopausal women with normal body weight may be at increased risk of breast cancer if they have high amounts of body fat, reported a study in JAMA Oncology.
The secondary analysis of a cohort enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative clinical trial and observational study included 3460 postmenopausal women with normal body mass index (BMI) who had dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), a highly accurate measure of adiposity, at baseline and 1, 3, 6, and 9 years follow-up.

At a median follow-up of 16 years, 182 invasive breast cancers had been diagnosed, of which 146 were estrogen-receptor (ER) positive. Women with the highest quartile of whole-body fat and trunk fat mass had an 88%-89% increased risk of invasive breast cancer and about a 2-fold greater risk of ER-positive breast cancer. Circulating levels of insulin, C-reactive protein, interleukin 6, leptin, and triglycerides were also higher in women at the highest quartiles of trunk fat mass.......
